Chinese Tea Ceremony
Tea is an integral part of Chinese culture. It played an important ceremonial role in Chinese history. Today tea is enjoyed on a daily basis by most Chinese because of its health benefits.
The origins of the tea ceremony lie in China. The preparation and ceremony of tea absorbed many elements from Confucianism, Daoism, and Buddhism. For example, the Confucian concept of "preserving good human relations in a collective" can be found in the social aspect behind the Chinese tea ceremony, as drinking tea in a group creates a harmonious atmosphere.
Drinking tea has played an important diplomatic role China's history. In ancient times it was offered as an important part of the greeting of foreign envoys. Today, tea is offered in formal and informal settings as a way to express friendliness and sincerity, in addition to strengthening positive relationships. Tea can even be used as a replacement for alcohol during toasts!
One of the most traditional places to enjoy a tea ceremony is in a tea house. Popularized during the Jin, Northern and Southern dynasties, it was common for people to visit these tea houses and drink away the afternoon. By the Yuan and Ming dynasties, performers began to operate across tea houses all over the country, attracting the literati and aristocrats. Tea houses sprouted all across the country and each developed their own unique style. Among some of the most well-known are the tea houses of Sichuan, Beijing, Hangzhou, and Guangzhou.
A commercialized modern form of tea ceremony is the Kung Fu tea ceremony, which combines martial arts, acrobatics, and traditional tea ceremony elements. Today, this highly complex tea ceremony is commonly used by tea shops in China as a way to advertise their tea and attract customers.
